OUR STORY
The Big Bear Cider is made from 100% apple juice, naturally vegan and naturally gluten free. We planted our first trees in 2009 and our orchards and cider production has grown from there.
We purchased one of these disused gravel pits and regenerated it back into a thriving Orchard. We’ve planted over 20 different varieties. Here at The Big Bear, we love nature and don’t use pesticide, we encourage birds, insects and wildlife to naturally propagate and protect our trees and apples.
In autumn we harvest the apples, the juice is then fermented using yeasts carefully chosen for their ability to bring out the delicate aromas and flavours of Big Bear’s apple varieties. A long, cool fermentation then allows the full cider characteristics to develop.
We make our Big Bear Cider is made from 100% apple juice, naturally vegan and naturally gluten free.
We know Essex doesn’t exactly spring to mind when looking at The Bear, however, we are keen to export all around the world and wanted a logo that works for different markets and products. Not sure if Olly Murs or Alan Sugar would be as flexible or travel… We could always give the bear a spray tan.
Essex Gold is a nod to the regenerated gravel pits that our orchards are planted on, gravel is known colloquially as Essex Gold. (To be said in a Frank Butcher voice.)

All of our experiences include an orchard tour; find out about our trees, the types of apples we grow, and how we founded The Big Bear Cider Mill.
You’ll then visit our Cider Barn to discover how our apples make their journey into our handcrafted cider; we explain how our apples are pressed, the juice fermented into cider and finally how it’s packaged into the final products. There will be opportunities to ask our knowledgeable team questions throughout your experience, and an opportunity to purchase gifts.
You will finish your experience with unlimited cider tasting in our Tap Room

After your tour you will have time to relax in our Tap Room and Orchards whilst you enjoy our handcrafted cider and a leisurely, plentiful buffet lunch.
All experiences are subject to current covid-19 restrictions being relaxed. In the event we are not able to run safely with the current restrictions we will re-schedule your experience.
These experiences are suitable for over 18’s only. Please follow us social media as we do run family friendly events throughout the year.
These tours include time outside in our Orchard so please ensure you have appropriate footwear, warm/wet weather clothes and sunscreen.
All prices shown above are per person.
All experiences need a minimum of 4 people to run. We can cater for larger groups on request.
The Big Bear Experience is a maximum of 6 guests to ensure you get the best experience.
You will receive a voucher for your experience we will then agree a mutually convenient time and date for you tour.
Please make us aware of any dietary requirements or allergies; we can cater for vegetarians and vegans and gluten free. Whilst every care will be taken to ensure we meet your requirements we cannot guarantee that we are not free from any allergen.
As we are a working Cider Mill, we open for tours and events once a month, this is usually the second week/weekend of the month.
All experiences must be booked within 12 months.
